You are to find a Protectorate expedition that has been missing for a while.

Objectives
* Colonel Cathcart told you about a Protectorate expedition that hasn't reported back since the earthquake. Find Hephaestus Research facility in Lower Underrail caves and locate the missing team.

Walkthrough
There are multiple routes into the area of upper caves where the research facility is. First, head back to Lower Underrail.
* You will require TNT for this route. Take the train to Rail Crossing. You can find the Hephaestus Research facility in the caves to the north. Once in the caves, head north to cross the river and then head south, two times east and two times south.
* Alternatively, head to GMS Compound. From the compound's first floor, enter a small rathound cave. Head east to cave with small bandit camp, continue through the camp to east and take the zone transition to north. Make your way through a crawler-filled cave into Hephaestus' entrance.

Once you come up to a stuck roller door with a body underneath, you've found Hephaestus and the missing expedition. You can now enter the facility by crawling under.

Inside you will find a massive burrower infestation, unleashed by the earthquake, and also an intact Protectorate Dreadnought. Use the dread to find and rescue the remaining expedition members. Once they have safely left the facility, return to Fort Apogee.

Rail Crossing's mayor tasks you with ridding the town of the Faceless who have taken over Buzzer's shop.

Objectives
* Captain Herve wants you to get rid of the Faceless, one way or another

Walkthrough
This can be a simple extermination mission, but there is also a non-violent solution.

There are two ways to go about this - a frontal assault by slaughtering the Faceless forces in the railyard, or sneaking in to the shop via the Burrower-infested tunnels south of the shop. On the second floor of the shop, there is a switch that can turn on the nearby autoturrets. When all of the ones inside of the shop are defeated, the rest outside will scatter.

The more diplomatic way is sneaking your way to the Faceless Mindreader and allowing him to scan your thoughts. While this completes the quest, it ultimately leads to Buzzer's death and you failing to save him. You can accomplish both objectives via a 60 effective persuasion check or having the Faceless' stolen object quest completed first. The Intimidation check will almost always fail.

Be advised that if you told Captain Herve you're just following Tanner's orders to help with the situation, he will not pay you any reward after you complete this quest. If you say you expect payment at first time, you'll get 300 or 400 Charons depending on effective mercantile. Save Buzzer's 100 (or 200) Charons will get paid no matter whether you say you expect payment or not.

Rail Crossing's mayor also wants you to save Buzzer if possible while dealing with the Faceless.

Objectives
* Captain Herve wants you to save Buzzer, who he believes is being held prisoner in his shop

Walkthrough
Make your way to Buzzer's shop and free him from his holding cell on the second floor. You have two options of approach here: a frontal assault to the shop with heavy Faceless resistance, or a stealthy assault by sneaking in through the tunnels located to the south of the shop. However, keep in mind, the tunnels are infested by burrowers.

Once you reach the second floor of Buzzer's shop, you can either kill the mindreader for the holding cell key, or pick the lock (70 skill required) and have Buzzer take care of the mindreader. Either way, the rest of the Faceless inside the shop will come upstairs to investigate if they hear noises of combat.

The peaceful way is to talk to the mindreader, undergo questioning, and persuade him to let Buzzer stay alive - this will require 60 persuasion. Alternatively, having completed the Faceless' stolen object quest will also convince the mindreader to spare Buzzer.
Silent Isle is a location in the waterways of Lower Caves.

Description
A mysterious, dark island located somewhere in the waterways between Core City and Junkyard, more specifically at the southwest corner of Core Ring. Most ferry captains stay away from this place, and it isn't near any main trading routes. Captain Broderick on the Junkyard Docks will take you there during and after a quest to retrieve cargo lost at the island. In the Underrail: Expedition expansion, the player can access Silent Isle with a Jet Ski.

Some azuridae, rathounds can be seen around and a large amounts of mindshrooms grow on the island. Walking around in the darkess of the island gives you a Strange Feeling, but this can be avoided by staying in light. Mysterious Pillars of psionic nature can be found in a cave underneath the isle.

The island
* 7 respawning Mindshrooms
* 4 patches of respawning Lake Mushrooms
* To the southeast is a secret (found with 7 Perception) underwater bridge leading to a small area with a dead man on it.
* on the north side of the isle is a metal container containing Lost Cargo (item for quest Retrieve the lost cargo) and a Periscope Part oddity (2 XP)
* on the west side of the isle is a pile of rubble containing a Trilobite Fossil oddity, 1 XP
* Can be fished in this area: Blue Eel, Minihead, Yellow Puckerfish, Walking Fish, Anglerfish, Pentapus

The caves
* The middle of the cave is occupied by Mysterious Pillars

<br>
Captain Broderick's story
This one time I was sailing back from the Hub when I started having problems with the engine's power converter. To fix it I had to turn off the main engine and I didn't want to do that in the middle of the river because the current was strong and I knew there were some stalagmites around I could crash into.

So I anchored at this nearby place the sailors call Silent Isle. I heard tales of it being cursed and how anyone who spends too much time there is never seen again and such nonsense. But that didn't scare me. The only thing I cared about is whether there were pirates there, and as far as I could tell there weren't any.

So I turned off the engine and main lights because I didn't want to be seen and I also didn't want them to drain the battery before I could finish the repairs. So I was working there in silence with just a flashlight on so I could see what I was doing. It took me hours to fix the converter, but I managed to do it. I powered up the engine and started to retract the anchor. And I switched on the main lights.

That's when I saw it... or should I say him. I saw me! Standing there on the shore looking back at myself.

It's not that just that I saw a guy that looked a lot like me, or even that I saw a guy that looked exactly like me... He was wearing the exact same clothes I was with exactly the same stains and tears that my clothes had. It was like I was looking into a mirror, except his pose was different.

And you know what the weirdest thing was? For a few brief moments I couldn't really tell which one of us was real. That was the creepiest feeling I ever had in my life.

I didn't know what to do. I just stood there staring at him and listening to the anchor pulling up. And as soon as the anchor was up, I pushed the throttle and raced out of there.

And nowadays I just steer clear of that island altogether.
:—Captain Broderick

Quests
* Dockmaster Silas gives you a mission to sail to the island with captain Broderick, find and retrieve lost cargo that's believed to be washed up there.
** The Lost Cargo can be found on the north-northwest shore inside a metal crate.

Secrets
* Underwater rock bridge in southeast shore, leading to a dead body.
You can either persuade or intimidate them to leave with 35 and 50 relevant effective social skill, bribe them to leave for 500 Stygian Coins (250 with 35 effective mercantile skill), or simply kill them. There's a caged up Injured Faceless in their camp, whom the player can free or drop to the chasm.

After you've led Mykola to the tunneler, you will be informed that he needs to buy some special parts worth 2000 Charons to fix it (If you opted to repair the Tunneler yourself, you don't need the 2000 charons.) Once you got the money for him, leave him repairing it and report back to Gorsky.

After you've led Mykola to the tunneler, you will be informed that he needs to buy some special parts worth 2000 Charons to fix it. If you opted to repair the Tunneler yourself, you don't need the 2000 charons. Once you got the money for him, leave him repairing it and report back to Gorsky.
Though it is typically lost after completing the quest, it can be kept by either passing a skill check with Gorsky or, failing that, visiting Quinton in South Gate Station.

After you're done with Bret's tasks, Tanner asks you to complete Gorsky's tasks. Once they are complete and you return to Tanner, you also gain 2000 XP.

Objectives
* Travel to GMS compound and talk to Gorsky (Essie at the Lower Underrail exit can instruct you on how to get there)
* Find a way to open the sealed door in the GMS compound
* Complete tasks Gorsky gives you and return to Tanner

Walkthrough
Head to SGS level 1, exit the station platform area to north, head west from the first junction and make your way to GMS compound. Speak to Gorsky once inside (100 XP) and he'll give you a task to a key to the storage door.

To access level 2 of the compound, you can either use the stairs in the northwest corner or the elevator, once you have re-routed power to it in the generator room. Level 2 is patrolled by 3 Sentry Bots, which can be very dangerous to take on as a low level character. Sneaking around is one option, and the ventilation shafts make this easier even for non-steathy characters. You will find an emergency hatch leading down to third level on the southeast corner of this level. The key to this hatch is on a dead body northwest from the hatch.

Upon entering level 3, you will find out that some raiders have attacked a small local community. With high enough social skills, you can talk your way out of the initial encounter and the raiders will become neutral towards you. Without social skills, you will have to kill at least the raiders immediately below the emergency hatch. After that, you can either kill the raiders and free the hostages - or ignore them and simply sneak around until you find the key. You will eventually find the Level 1 Storage Key Card (GMS) on the third level of the compound, in late Dr. Bloomberg's room. If you don't feel like searching for the key, after you've reached level 3 you can go back to Gorsky and persuade him to pack up and return to SGS (25 effective skill required), but you won't get the experience or the 400 credits. If you bring back the keycard you get the rewards and you can try to persuade him to give you the keycard back (30 effective skill required). If you fail the check, you can simply visit Quinton back in SGS and talk to him about it and visit Gorsky, who's returned to the armory.
