If you manage to persuade Cliff not to shoot you when you first meet, he will explain you his situation and ask you to save his girlfriend, Jenny, from the ruins below.

Objectives
* Save Cliff's girlfriend from the ruins southwest of Junkyard.

Walkthrough
Starting the quest
First of all, you will need 30 effective persuasion or intimidation skill to avoid a firefight. Talk with Cliff to start the quest.

Saving Cliff (optional)
The Doctor feat or a Coagulation Shot is needed to patch Cliff's wounds, otherwise he slowly bleeds to death. He will be dead when you return from the Abandoned Building. However, saving his life is not required to get the XP from quest completion.

It is also possible to save Cliff without the Doctor feat or a coagulation shot, but this requires you to avoid taking on this quest. The quest can be skipped by sneaking past Cliff into the Abandoned Building and saving Jenny without ever being asked to do so. Both Jenny and Cliff will survive, but you receive no reward. There is yet another way: it takes 3 minutes for his bleeding wound to kill him. If you manage to save Jenny in that time, Cliff will survive.

Finding and saving Jenny
The Abandoned Building is filled with burrowers. Not a nice place. Jenny is holed up inside one of the rooms in southeast corner of the building. Once you exit the building with Jenny, the quest is marked completed and you will receive your reward.

Damage resistance and threshold
Armor in Underrail reduces damage via one of two mechanics, percentage-based damage resistance or flat damage threshold (DR% / DT). When you take damage, your armor will either reduce it by the amount specified by the damage resistance or by the flat amount specified by the threshold, whichever is greater, not both. Thus, higher DT is better against faster attacks that deal less damage (such as SMGs, knife attacks, etc), while higher DR% is better against heavy attacks (snipers, sledgehammers, etc). Since version 0.1.14.2, player's mechanical resistance is capped at 95%.

Some armors are specialized against certain attack types and their resistances and/or thresholds are increased against those. (e.g. Mechanical damage threshold of Tactical Vests is increased by 200% against bullets.)

Damage modifier
Damage taken will also be reduced (or increased) by the damage modifier percentage. It is counted after any DR% / DT provided by armor, so it stacks multiplicatively with armor resistances and works against armor-piercing attacks. Some armors provide small amounts of damage reduction in addition to their DR% / DT. Many items, consumables and feats also provide damage reduction. Certain effects increase the damage modifier and thus increase damage taken.

Damage modifier sources

Armor penalty
Armor penalty is an important property of all armors. It reduces your Dodge, Evasion, Stealth and Movement Points by a percentage. The heavier the armor is, the more armor penalty it has. Total armor penalty is capped at 95% for most purposes, with the exception of feats such as Nimble. Armor penalty does not reduce movement points provided by temporary bonuses, such as Sprint.

Durability
Since version 0.1.7.0, most armors and weapons have durability. You must either buy or craft repair kits that can be used to keep your equipment in working order. Once an armor's durability has been degraded enough, your UI will notify you that you have Damaged Armor and the armor will provide reduced bonuses, or no bonuses at all in case of Heavily Damaged Armor. Armor that has reached heavily damaged status or zero durability provides no bonuses, but they can still be repaired back to normal. Any equipped heavily damaged armor still provides any penalties it may have.

Requirements
Some armor list a minimal base ability requirement. Those items can be equipped even without meeting the requirement, but at a cost. For example, Metal Armors list a minimal Strength value of 8 (or 9 in case of a Tungsten Steel Armor). When equipped and not meeting this requirement at the beginning of a combat turn, then the player will get a malus to action points, up to 15.

Armor slots
Headwear
In addition to helmets and balaclavas, useful gadgetry like goggles can be worn on head. The craftable headwear types are Balaclava, Goggles, Psionic Headband and Metal Helmet.

Shield emitter
Shield emitters provide your character with an energy shield when powered. Energy Shield Emitters are craftable and do not suffer from limited durability, but require electrical energy.

Armor suit
The main piece of your protective armor, encompassing your character from shoulders to ankles. The craftable armor suit types are Leather Armor, Tactical Vest, Riot Gear and Metal Armor.

Belt
Belts grant extra utility slots and various other bonuses. Belts are not craftable and do not suffer from limited durability unlike most other armor pieces.

Footwear
Boots provide additional protection and can improve your movement speed and melee combat performance. The craftable footwear types are Boots and Tabi Boots.
Types
Armor in Underrail can be roughly split into three types - light, medium and heavy. These are not set-in-stone limitations, but rough examples of different playstyles. Mixing and matching different types is possible and encouraged.

* Use the ladder entrance in the south-west map of the Middle Level of Core City (14 effective Perception to notice). The entrance is specifically in the western rectangular block, the one next to the gangsters, on the map screen that is west of Halim's Electronics Store.

* Find a hidden entrance behind the pipes in the Utility section of the Core City underpassages (Cc_utility.png), requires 11 effective Perception, but can by bypassed with the activated night vision mode of the Night Vision Goggles.

If player has already accepted or completed the Seek the Acid Hunters quest for any of the Oligarchs, he will be missing and only his laptop may be found. Player may still be able to finish Phreak's crunch on their own, however most of the rewards for his quests will become unavailable.

The player may eventually find him and be tasked to retrieve a set of heavy-duty cables from the Acid Hunters' lair, potentially also unlocking a trap door leading directly near their hideout (depending on his attitude). For finishing this quest, he will give the player the Camera Jammer.

After that, the player is tasked to retrieve two items from two different hideouts in Upper Underrail. For this mission Phreak grants the player the Orange Box to complete the sound-based puzzles.
Afterwards, the player will be tasked to turn on boilers possible in the abandoned facility in order to stress-test the system. Doing so will enable a path leading directly to the Research Facility and to the Abomination's Lair, but it is dangerous as there are both a robot (likely varying in difficulty, up to an Industrial Robot) and several Death Stalkers.

By the end of his quest-line he may also allow the player to buy Contact-Activated Capacitative Sheets (for 200 charons) and Forged Underrail Express Tickets (for 100 charons). Additionally, with 50 effective Persuasion, he can be convinced to grant the player several extra minutes in the Gauntlet. His stock refreshes every 60 minutes.

Phreak's rewards depend on whether the player already knows about him and general respect during conversations. Knowing about Phreak ahead of time (or passing his Persuasion check in dialogue, 85 effective skill) and not insulting him will unlock all 3 rewards (Camera Jammer, CACS and Forged Underrail Express Tickets).

In addition there is a hidden modifier that decreases and increases based on player's dialogue with Phreak that modifies the amount of goods given to player during a purchase of CACS or forged tickets. By discussing various things and being respectful to him, allows player to obtain more items for the same price.

There are few ways of learning more about Phreak before meeting him:
* Player can read his entry at Oculus with second clearance level.
* Emergency phone north of GMS past the bandit checkpoint contains some information about him if you can repair it (requires Electronics or Hacking).
* Player can find some information about him on the Bloody Mobile Computer found at an ironhead camp in the dark metro tunnels between Foundry and Core City.
* Another emergency phone with information about Phreak can be found deep inside an Ironhead lair south-east of Foundry (Simon Peres' hideout).
After successfully obtaining information about Phreak, player should get a new Other sidequest in their quest notes telling them to find the person responsible for hacking underrail metro emergency phones.

As a side-interaction, player can discuss various topics with him, including his hacking techniques. With 85 base Hacking the player can talk about how Phreak should learn to use the cutting-edge Haxxors that he will scoff at, but if the player has the Huxkey its design completely takes Phreak by surprise.

If the player turns Phreak hostile via dialogue the player has several options to make use of base stats to counter-attack:<br>
* With 10 Strength: Both player and Phreak receive damage without any debuffs
* With 13 Strength: Phreak is hit for some damage and gets Stunned for 1 turn and Dazed for 3 turns
* With 16 Strength: Phreak is instantly killed
* With 11 Dexterity: Phreak's attack is nullified
* With 15 Dexterity: Phreak is hit for some damage and gets Stunned for 1 turn and Dazed for 3 turns
* With 10 Agility: Phreak's attack is nullified
* With 14 Agility: Phreak is hit for some damage and gets Stunned for 1 turn and Dazed for 3 turns
* With 13 Constitution: Phreak's attack is nullified and player gains +15 Initiative bonus
* With 14 Will: Phreak's attack is nullified and player gains +15 Initiative bonus
* Failed counter-attack will cause player to suffer damage, become Stunned for 1 turn and Dazed for 3 turns

Trivia
* Phreak is based off John Draper and the phreaking culture.
** His style of "crunching" is a reference to John Draper's discovery that the toy whistles that came with the Cap'n Crunch cereal boxes played at a perfect frequency suitable for phreaking.

The Abomination is a unique Hunchback Mutant that can be encountered in a sewer pit in the Core City Sewers, which can be accessed after Phreak's questline.

It is a "boss" character, and on DOMINATING difficulty will appear with 400% of its regular health.

Description
The abomination resembles an ordinary hunchback mutant in both appearance and behavior, at least initially. It has the ability to revive after it is killed and will get progressively bigger and tougher the more times it is "killed" in addition to gaining passive regen per round akin to a Death Stalker.

How it is able to do this is unknown, although the large amount of toxic gas in it's lair may be a factor. There is a dead Tchortist in the area that does not appear if the Robed Figure near the Research Facility was killed, making it impossible to obtain the Tchortist Bioscrubber.

Abomination is also capable of tracking the player even when in stealth, and will automatically pursue the player's current location even when out of sight.

Fighting Tactics
The entire area that the abomination is fought in is heavily blanketed with toxic gas, making visibility extremely poor and the use of a Gas Mask or other form of resistance essential. However, there are several valves in the area, which can be interacted with outside of combat to lower the amount of gas. There are also many explosive, napalm, and acid barrels and piles of junk throughout the area which gives the abomination many items to throw at the player.

It will finally permanently die after it has revived several times, signified by it making several loud choking sounds and it's body dissolving. The amount of times it takes to be killed also depends on difficulty. On Dominating it has to be killed ten times and it's HP are 1610, 1880, 2020, 2150, 2290, 2420, 2560, 2700, 2830, 2970.
It is possible to find out who the suspected Protectorate informant in Free Drones is.
* You have revealed that Alvin Bate was a spy working for the Protectorate.

Walkthrough
expand section
* This can be done anytime after you complete Get equipment from Junkyard. Upon completion and speaking with Trenton, he mentions a possible spy and the disappearance of a former Free Drone leader, Marcella. You must talk to Trenton again about her specifically before you will be able to mention her name to anyone else.
* Once Free Drones mention Marcella, learn her nickname 'Muffin'
** Either pickpocket Bate's Love Letter (an effective pickpocketing skill of 46 is enough)
** Or talk to people in Free Drones base about her, specifically Darling.
* Head to Hanging Rat and talk to amnesiac patron, mention both Marcella and muffin.
* Return to Free Drones base with Marcella for a confrontation with Bate.

If the spy is exposed before SRO assault, Protectorate will be less prepared for the attack. Other free drone missions are unaffected.

NOTE: Keep an eye on Trenton during the confrontation, as his death will paralyze the entire cell, locking you out of its merchants, and potentially putting a premature end to the questline.
random loot table entries for reward column

Most skillchecks are based on base skill level at that level. For example, areas with roughly level 18 content will have locks that require 100 effective skill. Most locks before Deep Caverns can be opened with 100 effective skill. Locks in Deep Caverns go up to level 25 or 135 skill.

The following list contains skillchecks only up to the GMS compound. It also may be that there are some skillchecks missing.

Besides some unique drops, loot is chosen from a pool of items. See Random loot table for details. The reward column is currently mostly empty because most loot is randomised. There are some filled entries, but it is not guaranteed that the loot always consists of those.
Chief in Foundry wants you to investigate a group of Faceless near Foundry.

Objectives
* Chief wants you to investigate a small group of Faceless that was spotted west of Foundry. Find out why they're there and report to the chief.

Walkthrough
One can start this quest by gaining the trust of Chief, which one gets after completing one of his quests. This is optionally, one can search the Faceless without completing his quests.
Follow the railroad tracks to west and you'll come up to a cave on the north side of the tracks. The Faceless group is there.

Talking to them reveals they're looking for a special item that was stolen from them and they could use your help. Should you choose the less diplomatic alternative and attack he Faceless group, you won't ever find out why they were there.

If you learnt from Buzzer that the item they are looking for is in possession of Cornell (Acid Hunters), you can tell that to the Faceless, and they'll leave the area (you gain 1 oddity XP immediately, but Chief still rewards you only 100 Stygian Coin).

Once you know what they want, return to Chief for your reward.
Ammunition
Crossbows can use various special bolts, which makes them a versatile weapon. Shooting special bolts are not special attacks and thus doesn't benefit from Smart Goggles. Shooting special bolts costs 4 AP more than a regular attack. With a cyclon or any crossbow with the Pneumatic Reloader enhancement a special bolt attack costs 25 AP meaning you can shoot twice per round. The feat Marksman removes the additional cost of special bolts.
Lockpicking skill checks
Incomplete list
Most skillchecks are based on base skill level at that level. For example, areas with roughly level 18 content will have locks that require 100 effective skill. Most locks before Deep Caverns can be opened with 100 effective skill. Locks in DC go up to level 25 or 135 skill.

The following list is incomplete, there are only skillchecks up to the GMS compound. It also may be that there are some skillchecks missing. The reward column is mostly empty because I thought the content would be randomised (or I couldn't pick the lock) but besides some unique drops it could be that the content is chosen from a pool of given items verify so there are some filled entries but it is not guaranteed that the loot always consists of those. Hower that doesn't mean the containers are empty, most of them contain one or more items.

Hower that doesn't mean the containers are empty, most of them contain one or more items (except doors of course).
}}

After some time has passed since completing Abram's last mission, you will be contacted by a random Junkyard commoner who tells you that Abram wants to see you and you should head to the caves west of Junkyard entrance if you want some action.

At least an hour or so needs to pass, and one of these commoners can be met at Junkyard Gate. Another can be found in the slums standing in front of Vince.

Objectives
* Rescue Maura from the Protectorate prison in Junkyard for Abram (you can access the prison through a hole in caves north of Junkyard gate)

Walkthrough
Easier than it sounds, thanks to Abram's preparation. The ventilation shafts lead directly to Maura's cell, although you will have to drop out of them once and sneak to the next section via a medical lab. If you can't pick the cell door lock (80 lockpicking needed), you must either steal or loot Cell 1 Key (Junkyard) from the guard in the security monitoring room in east, just north of the stairs leading to embassy upper level. Another key is in the medical lab.

Alternatively, just go in guns blazing and kill everyone. Free Maura once there are no Protectorate survivors left. This should not turn Protectorate forces outside the prison hostile, unless you leave the prison via the upstairs leading to embassy.

After the mission, Abram invites you to find him in Core City later.

Or you can betray Abram and report his plan to Second Lieutenant Garren. Then Garren will lead an assault team to the cave. Joining the fight will give you 500 charons and 2000 classic or 1 oddity XP as reward.
