The official version of what followed, supported both by Miland and Erika, is that during the meeting Cornell shot Edmund, and immediately fled the scene. In reality, the bidding match between Miland and Edmund escalated into a fight. As they were wrestling, the gun in Miland's hand went off, to some degree making Edmund's death an unfortunate accident instead of clear-cut murder.
