Second raid

Captain Grim wants you to raid The Rig and destroy the sonar located there.

Objectives

  • The Black Eels have been using an advanced sonar system to detect and thwart pirate raiding parties, and it is located at the Eel-controlled Rig. Go there and investigate all you can about the Rig, its defenses and the sonar's exact location. Meet up with Cruzer's party at the ruins at the mid-eastern part of the Core Ring, north of a Protectorate outpost, after you've done so and continue with the plan.

Walkthrough

This section needs expansion.

The goal of the mission is to destroy the sonar found in the western part of the Rig accessible only from the east. If player has completed both of the previous raids alone, they will be given an option to convince captain to let you do it solo too.

There are few ways of how player can complete this quest.

  • Frontal attack - by simply killing everyone as you move towards the sonar. If player has agreed to join the Cruzer's party, they will be transported to the eastern part of the Rig. Player will be then tasked by him to disable the Auto-Turrets nearby. This can be done by pulling the switch in the power room in the south-east corner. This will however alert the Black Eel Heavy Gunner who will try to turn on the power again. Return to the disguised pirate ferry to give a signal to attack when ready.
  • Stealthy approach - with high enough Stealth, player can sneak their way through the Rig. The sonar is guarded by a Black Eel Cut-Throat who will become hostile if they spot the player, but it is possible to avoid detection if careful. Use a TNT Charge near the sonar while in stealth to destroy it.
  • Infiltration - player can use Work Coverall to disguise themselves as a laborer working for the Black Eels. You will need to pass a Persuasion check (80 effective skill) in order to convince the guards to let you roam the Rig freely. If player has finished Gang showdown quest for Black Eels in the Junkyard and Dockmaster Silas is still alive, the persuasion check is lowered to 50 and an Intimidation option (40 effective skill) will also appear, allowing for easier infiltration. If player goes near the power room, they will be stopped by the heavy gunner, asking you to leave. With 95 Persuasion (persuasion check is lowered to 50 if player also has 50 effective Electronics), he will allow you to turn off the turrets. The western area is patrolled by two dogs which will become aggressive if they spot the player. With high enough Intimidation (90 effective skill), it is possible to endure the staring contest with the Doberman, causing it to become indifferent. Pit Bull will however attack player immediately if it spots you. After approaching the sonar, the cut-throat will demand player to leave. With 95 Persuasion (persuasion check is lowered to 50 if player also has 50 effective Hacking), player can pretend to be the mechanic tasked to fix the sonar. After he goes away, player is free to destroy the sonar manually (as long as no-one notices you) or hack it (100 effective) in order to make it no longer work properly.

After job is done, return to the captain for your reward. If player managed to complete the mission on their own, they will be rewarded with bonus 1 oddity XP/1000 classic XP and 300 charons more.

NOTE: Destroying the sonar will have dire consequences for the waterways and all ferry captains will now ask for double the price for transporting to any location. After this quest, player might also sometimes encounter Pirates vs Merchants Naval Battles, Pirates vs Black Eels Naval Battles and Pirates vs Protectorate Naval Battles random events.

You can't get this quest if you destroyed the sonar before speaking with Grim.
