Factions are groups of characters in Underrail and Underrail: Expedition that share a common philosophy. There are many factions that you can help or fight. In your travels, you will shape the fates of many of these groups throughout South Underrail and in the Black Sea.
Description
There are a lot of major and minor factions in Underrail, each of which can initially be either hostile to the player (such as Gangsters, Raiders, Bandits) or neutral (Protectorate, Tchortists, etc.), but their attitude may change during the story due to the player's actions. The player character begins the game, and normally stays, allied to South Gaters.
Player faction choices
Over the course of the game, the protagonist may help or even join certain mutually exclusive rival factions: taking a side in Junkyard gang war (Scrappers or Black Eels), working for one of Core City's major corporations and oligarchs (JKK, Coretech or Praetorian Security) or taking part in the conflict between expansionist Protectorate and Free Drone anarchists. The player will also have to decide how to deal with The Faceless, a mysterious group of dangerous but not necessarily hostile dwellers of the Deep Caverns. Inquisitive and observant players may also find themselves presented with the opportunity to join a mysterious society during their travels.
In the Underrail: Expedition expansion, the player may side with the titular Expedition or Grim Jetter pirates while exploring the Black Sea. The violent and primitive Sørmirbæren cannot be generally reasoned with, they will attack you on sight.
The Factions of Underrail
Major Factions of South Underrail:
United Stations & Protectorate
The United Stations and its military arm Protectorate from Central and North Underrail expanded its interests into South Underrail five years ago. Most stations are wary of their expansionistic agenda but are willing to begin diplomacy and trade with them. The United Stations is ruled by the Council of Five with a special position for the highest-ranking member of the Protectorate which is currently General Melek. He is considered the de facto leader of the United Stations due to his power and influence over the other council members. Colonel Cathcart is the highest-ranking Protectorate officer in South Underrail.
Free Drones
Anarchistic and uncontrollable, The Free Drones were founded by Wallace Steel to fight against the tyranny of the Protectorate after their takeover of North Underrail. After he was captured and executed, his movement lived on. Free Drones formed a secretive cell in South Underrail where they also plan to end Protectorate's desire to control the region by any means necessary.
Tchortists
Guided by the holy words of their leader Eidein, the Tchortists are a pseudoscientific/religious organization that worships a mysterious entity called Tchort that is believed to dwell in the blackest depths of Deep Caverns. To underestimate them as harmless lunatics would be dangerous: their base of operations is the Institute of Tchort, a former Biocorp University that has provided them with incredible knowledge and lethal weaponry.
The Faceless
The denizens of Underrail know precious little about The Faceless except for rumor and myth. Only a handful of people have seen them and even fewer have lived to tell their tale. What is known is that the Faceless reside in the ominous and difficult to reach Deep Caverns far below the Underrail. The Faceless have become dramatically more active in Underrail for reasons unknown.
Factions of Core City:
The Three Corporations
Led by the oligarch Rupert Simmons, Coretech is one of the three major corporations in Core City. Specialized in high-tech, Coretech is comprised of the remnants of former Biocorp research & development personnel. They control many of Biocorp's old facilities in Core City.
Ruled by the upstart oligarch Gunnar Edstrom, JKK broadcasts the Arena and Gauntlet matches all over Underrail. They also control the betting over arena matches. JKK corporation's operatives do the most undercover work in Core City.
Praetorian Security is the remnants of Biocorp's security forces commanded by Archibald Knight. In the past, Biocorp used to control the entire Core City, but it split into smaller factions who fought each other for years on the streets. Ever since the open hostilities ended, Praetorian Security has played a significant role in maintaining a semblance of order in the city.
Core City Minor Factions
The Acid Hunters are a small-time gang led by Cornell. This crew of bandits has found themselves in way over their heads.
One of many gangs in Core City, they will meet an old friend and settle a score.
Another one of Core City's gangs, they fought another gang years ago and left survivors desperate for revenge.
Factions of Lower Underrail and Lower Caves
Stations of Lower Underrail
The industrial heart of South Underrail, Foundry is famous for being the only working metallurgical facility in the entire region and its unique TiChrome alloy. This station democratically elects its leadership with its current mayor being Martin Marshall. Foundry is considered one of the safest places to live despite the heavy pollution and hazardous conditions due to its strong economy affording them heavy fortifications and the most well-trained guards in all of South Underrail.
Rail Crossing is an independent town built inside an old train depot led by Mayor Captain Herve. It is a frequent trading partner with South Gate Station and is opening up to trade with the United Stations and Protectorate. Rail Crossing is a relatively peaceful place, just stay away from the local drunk.
South Gate Station is an autonomous community. It is the most powerful independent faction outside of Core City and its leaders are considering an invitation to join the United Stations as its first member station in South Underrail. It is ruled by a council of three, Hadrian Tanner, Vera Hale and Gorsky. It is the settlement where the Underrail begins and you will most likely be involved in their troubles and fate.
Towns of Lower Caves
A crude, lawless settlement originally formed by scavengers around an old junkyard. Two rival gangs, the Scrappers and Black Eels fight for total control over its valuable resources which each gang trade across South Underrail. While Junkyard is not a member of United Stations, it does have a Protectorate presence in the form of an outpost and embassy which has been selflessly providing supplies to the needy locals outside, though some consider this a ploy for popular support.
After the old Hathor Mine flooded, the coal mining outpost turned into a bountiful hunting camp thanks to a nearby underground river and caverns rich in local fauna. Camp Hathor is a major producer of meat in Underrail and trades with all of South Underrail's settlements, maintaining particularly good relations with South Gate Station. Its current leader is Edger Garnham who is trying to deal with critter problems amongst other things.
Outlaw Factions
The Factions of Underrail: Expedition
Major Factions of the Black Sea
An expedition into the Black Sea led by Professor Edward Oldfield and protected by Aegis Incorporated, the expedition hopes to discover the missing technologies of the cursed region and the reasons why it was abandoned by its technologically advanced creators.
Pirates of the Black Sea led by the infamous Captain Grim based from the lawless Port Ceto. Little is known about these dangerous raiders except their bloodthirsty desire for glory and loot.
- Sørmirbæren, also known as the "Serpentborn"
Dangerous natives of the Black Sea, the Sørmirbæren are a tribal society of viking-like warriors openly hostile towards all outsiders attempting to encroach on their lands. Their shamanistic rituals and serpentine apperance are a complete mystery, the only word that an outsider hears is their warcry "Flottsørmir!"
Minor Factions of the Black Sea
Game mechanics
The factions presented in this wiki (infoboxes, articles) are presented from a story point of view. The technical factions controlling attitudes between characters are more complex. The baseline of how faction relations work is simple: If hostilities emerge between two characters (be it PC and NPC or two NPCs), their whole factions are now hostile to each other.
Everything else is an exception, and the two main exceptions are zone control rules and splitting characters into smaller factions.
- Zone Control
- Uncontrolled and Partially Controlled Zones — Allow assassination with traps without propagating hostilities.
- Leave No Witnesses — Hostility propagation is delayed until you leave the zone, killing everyone prevents it.
- Security Camera Footage — Delayed hostilities just from being seen in camera footage.
Technical faction list
The simple hostility propagation means that characters are not always members of the faction you would expect. There are lots of small factions.
